Yesterday I came back from Kyoto, one of the most prominent tourist sites in Japan. Over there I met two fiends of mine, one of which is temporarily back from New York, and the other is a Hiroshima resident participating in an art event in Kyoto. We had first met in New York about 20 years ago. We had a very good time in Kyoto. So, unlike my usual behavior, I took a lot of pictures. Here are some of them.

An unconventional conventional reel was waiting for me when I got back from Kyoto. On one of my earlier posts (No. 1469), I said my experimentation on using conventional reels was over. However, recently I realized I had not yet tried one peculiar kind of conventional reel, so-called “underhead reel.” Whereas normal conventional reels sit over a fishing rod, an underhead reel hangs underneath it, just like a spinning reel. This morning I brought my first underhead reel, Ultima XENO, to Lake Shinji. I made a few several nice casts. The casting distance was not bad, and I felt great. However, the spool suddenly became unable to be free. Even if the lever was at “FREE” position, the spool remained under some drag pressure. The spool was unable to rotate freely. My casting distance was reduced to merely a few meters. Because the reel was new, not second-hand, I decided to contact the distributor of the reel, instead of fixing it by myself. Stay tuned.
