(No. 611) Shimafugu at Nanbo in Etomo Harbor (恵曇港の南防にてシマフグ)

There was a series of heavy rains over last weekend. This morning I hoped the Japanese sea bass became active in the muddy water around breakwaters in Etomo Harbor. First I drove to Sinsinbo, the biggest breakwater in the harbor, but it was off-limits due to some construction. Then I drove to Nanbo, one of smaller breakwaters. The water around it was choppy and moderately muddy. I felt a big Japanese sea bass would attack my lure at any moment. It happened at the first cast of my Northbar Bottledarter, but the fish was not a Japanese sea bass but a shimafugu (Takifugu xanthopterus). The hook of the lure was not in the mouth but on its side. It was a big pufferfish of 53 cm (21 in.) long. It could be delicious but also violently poisonous. So I released it.

（先週末は、一連の豪雨でした。私は今朝、恵曇港の防波堤周囲の水が濁り、スズキの活性が上がっているのではないかと期待しました。そこでまず、同港最大の防波堤、新々防に行きましたが、何かの工事中で、立ち入り禁止になっていました。次に、より小さい防波堤、南防に行きました。周囲の海は波立ち、ほどほどに濁っています。大型のスズキが今にも私のルアーを襲いそうに思われました。それが起きたのは、ノースバー・ボトルダーターの１投目でした。しかしその魚は、スズキではなく、シマフグでした。ルアーの針は、魚の口ではなく、横腹にかかっています。全長53センチの大きなフグでした。美味な魚ですが、猛毒でもあります。なので逃してあげました。）
