(No. 444) No Fish at Maruiwa in Owashi (大芦の丸岩にて釣果なし)

Today I recognized that my hobby had switched over again. Since I caught one Japanese Spanish mackerel in Etomo Harbor on New Year's Day I have been skunked for four months. Four months! Before I caught the last fish, my hobby was not considered as fishing but as “non-fishing,” and I identified myself as a “non-fisherman.” Why? Because I was able to have fun only with casting and retrieving my lures without catching any fish at all. Since my last post I have been to Lake Shinji many times, but the Japanese sea bass has not been responsive to my big American lures yet. They seem responsive only to much smaller vibration plugs.

（私は今日、自分の趣味が再び変わってしまっていることに気づきました。元旦に恵曇港でサワラを釣って以来、４カ月間もボウズが続いています。４カ月もです！　あの最後の魚が釣れる前、私の趣味は、魚釣りではなく“無魚釣り”だと見なされており、私は自分のことを“無魚釣り師”だと考えていたのでした。なぜかって？　全く魚が釣れなくても、ただルアーを投げて巻くだけで私は楽しかったからです。前回の投稿以降、私は何回も宍道湖へ足を運んでいますが、スズキたちは大きなアメリカン・ルアーにまだ反応してくれません。ずっと小さいバイブレーション・プラグにのみ反応しているようです。）

So I decided to let the lake take a brief break and went to Maruiwa in Owashi this morning. The sea around the fishing spot was very quiet. I gave up fishing sooner than I had planned, only one and a half hours after I started casting my lures about 6:30 a.m. On my way back to the parking space, I found Mr. F, one of regular fishermen in Maruiwa, walking down the path in the woods. He told me a piece of interesting information he obtained from a professional fisherman. According to Mr. F, about 30 dolphins are around the shore of Shimane Peninsula and scared away many fish including amberjacks.

（そこで私は、湖に短い休みを与えることにし、今朝は、大芦の丸岩へ行ったのです。釣り場周辺の海は、とても静かでした。私は、午前６時30分頃にルアーを投げ始めたのですが、その１時間半後、当初の計画よりも早めに納竿しました。駐車スペースに戻る時、丸岩の常連釣り師の一人であるＦさんが、林の中の小道を降りてこられました。そして、漁師から得たという興味深い情報を教えてくださったのです。Ｆさんによると、島根半島の沿岸を30頭前後のイルカが泳いでおり、青物を含む多くの魚を追い払ってしまったそうです。）

(No. 443) No Fish at Susumi-hana in Owashi (大芦の須々海鼻にて釣果なし)

The water around Susumi-hana in Owashi has been calm since yesterday morning, and I got skunked for consecutive two mornings. The water temperature has risen considerably, but I did not see any baitfish around the quiet eastern end of Susumi Bay. The water was so peaceful that hermit crabs, tiny shrimps, and stray small fish seemed completely satisfied with their lives in tide pools in which taciturn sea urchins and starfish reside. Only disturbance they had to endure this morning must have been the one caused by a giant. The giant who is said to use only American lures tried to shoot the video of their beautiful lives.

（大芦の須々海鼻周辺の海は、昨日の朝からずっと穏やかであり、昨日と今日の朝、私は続けてボウズでした。海水温はかなり上昇しているのですが、須々海湾の静かな東端周辺にベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）の姿はありません。海はとてものんびりしているため、ヤドカリ、小エビ、そして、群れとはぐれた小魚たちは、寡黙なウニやヒトデが住む潮溜まりでの生活に、完全に満足しているようでした。今朝、彼らが耐え忍ばねばならなかった騒乱は、とある巨人が引き起こしたものだけであったでしょう。アメリカのルアーだけを使うと言われるこの巨人は、彼らの美しい生活をビデオに収めようとしたのです。）

(No. 442) Chat with Tourist at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にて観光客とおしゃべり)

Subsequent to the chat with tourists from Hokkaido yesterday, another tourist talked to me at the shore of Lake Shinji this morning. When I started to explain the types of fish and the degree of salt water in the lake to her, I realized that she is not only a tourist but also an angler. She was from Shizuoka Prefecture. Facing the Pacific Ocean, Shizuoka lies in the opposite side of the Main Island of Japan. They can catch the bluefin tuna there. The fish is kind of rare in the Sea of Japan, in which the Shimane Peninsula lies. I also told her that the third “Sunday Chamachi,” one of local street festivals, would be held today. No fish was caught this morning as usual, but chatting like this is very satisfactory. Viva the American pencil popper!! How wonderfully conspicuous you are!!
（北海道からお越しの観光客との昨日のおしゃべりに続いて、今朝の宍道湖岸でも、またもや観光のお客様が話しかけてこられました。宍道湖にいる魚の種類や海水濃度について説明を始めた私は、この女性が、観光客であるだけでなく、釣り人でもあることに気づきました。静岡県からいらした方でした。太平洋に面する静岡県は、日本の本州の反対側に位置します。そこではマグロを釣ることができます。この魚は、島根半島が位置する日本海にはあまりいません。それから私は、「日曜茶町」と呼ばれる地元のストリート・フェスティバルの第３回が、今日、開催されることもお知らせしました。例によって今朝も魚は釣れませんでしたが、こんなおしゃべりが出来ればとても満足です。アメリカのペンシル・ポッパー万歳!!　お前たちは、なんて素晴らしく目立つのか!!）

(No. 441) No Fish at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にて釣果なし)

I have started seeing more lure fishermen at Lake Shinji. Yesterday I went to the shore of Shirakata Park, and I found two lure fishermen by Shinjiko Ohashi Bridge. I cast my favorite lures for about an hour at dusk. Not only I but also the other two lure fishermen seemed to unable to catch fish. This morning I fished at the shore of the opposite side of the lake. I saw another one, whom I had known before. Nothing happened to both of us. We had a short chat and consoled each other. Then, three tourists talked to me. The three ladies said they were from Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan’s main islands. I told them that sooner or later I would catch a huge Japanese sea bass here and the length of it could reach one meter. They got pleasantly surprised.

（宍道湖でルアー釣り師の姿を見る機会が増えてきました。白潟公園に行った昨日は、宍道湖大橋のそばに２人のルアー釣り師の姿がありました。私は夕暮れ時に１時間ほど、お気に入りのルアーを投げました。私だけでなく、その２人のルアー釣り師もまた、魚を釣ることができないようでした。そして今朝は、湖の対岸で釣りました。以前お見かけしたことのある、別のルアー釣り師の姿がありました。私たちのどちらにも何も起きませんでした。私たちは少しおしゃべりし、お互いを慰め合いました。それから、３人の観光客が私に話しかけてきたのでした。日本の最北端に位置する、北海道から来られた女性たちです。私は彼女たちに言いました。遅かれ早かれ、私はここでスズキを釣るのであって、その全長は１メートルに達するのですよ、と。すると彼女たちは、楽しそうに驚いたのでした。）

(No. 440) Casting Practice at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にてキャスティング練習)

Few lure fishermen have started casting their favorite lures towards the vast surface of Lake Shinji while bait fishermen have started catching Japanese sea bass in the lake. At this time of the year lure fishermen tend to catch the fish primarily at Lake Nakaumi or the Ohashi River. I am a lure fisherman too, but my lures and fishing style are probably vastly different from those of my fellow countrymen. So I don’t care what others do.

（宍道湖では、エサ釣り師たちにスズキが釣れ始めている一方で、広大な湖面に向けてお気に入りのルアーを投げ始めたルアー釣り師たちの数は、まだ少ないようです。一年のこの時期、ルアー釣り師たちは、主に中海か大橋川でスズキを釣ることが多いのです。私もルアー釣り師のはしくれですが、私のルアーと釣りのスタイルは、他の皆さんとは、おそらく大きく異なるはずです。ですので私は、他の皆さんのことは気にしないのです。）

These days I walk to the lake with just one or two favorite lures whenever I need a break from my work. The lake is just several minutes away from my place on foot. I often use an American pencil popper. As I mentioned before in some of my previous posts, shaking the pencil popper the way American fishermen do is fun and also a good attraction for bystanders including tourists. Not only the movement of the lure but also the posture of mine when I am using the pencil popper seems an eye-catcher. Sometimes I find myself to be a lakeside object in a beautiful picture of Lake Shinji.

（最近は、仕事をしていて休憩が必要になると、お気に入りのルアーを１つか２つ持って、宍道湖まで歩きます。湖は、私の家から徒歩で数分の距離にあるのです。私はしばしば、アメリカのペンシル・ポッパーを使います。以前の投稿で何度か触れた通り、アメリカの釣り師のやり方でペンシル・ポッパーをシェイクするのは楽しく、また、観光客を含む見物人にとっては良い見世物ともなります。ルアーの動きだけでなく、ペンシル・ポッパーを使っている時の私のポーズまでもが、人目を引くようです。私は時々、自分が湖畔のオブジェクトとなっている宍道湖の美しい写真に出会います。）

(No. 439) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて釣果なし)

The cheery blossoms were being gone. Part of the road running along the shore of Nonami is called "Cherry Road" because the long and winding road has a lot of cherry trees along it. Saruwatari is one of the most productive fishing spots in the area, and its entrance is located around the middle of Cherry Road. This morning I fished at Saruwatari for the first time this year. Since I came back from the U.S. in 2014 I have caught the yellowtail amberjack only at Saruwatari. So this spot is special to me. As I had expected, nothing exciting happened today except when a bevy of tiny fish came closer to the shore briefly and created subtle ripples on the surface. I just wondered how many times I would come to this beautiful spot this year. 

（桜の花は散りつつありました。野波の沿岸を走る道路の一部は「チェリーロード」と呼ばれています。長く、曲がりくねったその道沿いには、たくさんの桜の木が植えてあるのです。猿渡は、この地域で最もよく釣れる釣り場の一つであり、その入口は、チェリーロードのだいたい真ん中あたりに位置しています。今朝、私は今年初めて、猿渡で釣りました。2014年に米国から戻ってきて以来、この猿渡でしか、私にはヒラマサが釣れていません。ですので、この釣り場は私にとって、特別な場所なのです。今日は、とても小さな魚の群れがちょっとだけ接岸し、水面に微妙なさざ波を立てた時以外は、予測していた通り、何も面白いことは起きませんでした。私はただ、今年は何回、この美しい場所に通うことになるのだろうと思いました。）

(No. 438) No Fish at Ohashi River (大橋川にて釣果なし)

I had been engaged in a kind of household chores for some time, so that I had not been able to go fishing. This morning I got released at last and went to the Ohashi River. They say that fishermen have started catching the Japanese sea bass in the river. This migratory fish will arrive at Lake Shinji soon, and currently most of them seem to be in the river connecting Lake Nakaumi and Lake Shinji. I kept casting my favorite lures for about one hour from 6 a.m. Unfortunately nothing happened this morning with a stagnant current, but I am sure that I will catch nice Japanese sea bass sooner or later in either the Ohashi River or Lake Shinji.

（しばらくの間、ある種の家事に携わっていたため、釣りに行くことができませんでした。今朝、ついに私は解放され、大橋川へと向かったのです。どうやら大橋川でスズキが釣れ始めています。移動性のこの魚は、じきに宍道湖にやって来るのですが、現在は主に、中海と宍道湖をつなぐ大橋川にいるようです。私は、午前６時からの約１時間、お気に入りのルアーを投げ続けました。流れは淀んでおり、残念ながら今朝は何も起きませんでしたが、遅かれ早かれ、大橋川か宍道湖のどちらかで、良い型のスズキが釣れると思います。）
