Just after daybreak I started casting my topwater lures for a yellowtail amberjack from Maruiwa in Owashi. Today I took out 5 lures, and one of them was an old Hopkins No=Eql which had sentimental value for me. Unlike the current production, an old Hopkins had the “HOPKINS NO=EQL” inscription on it. I guess it is difficult to get the inscribed one now, but this was not the reason why mine had the sentimental value. When I was leaving New York in 2014, one of my fishing buddies inscribed his name on a old Hopkins of his own and gave it to me. I had not used the memorial lure until this morning.
（ヒラマサ狙いのトップウォーター・ルアーを、大芦の丸岩から投げ始めたのは、夜明け直後のことでした。今日は５つのルアーを持ち出したのですが、そのうちの１つは、私にとっては思い出の品であるホプキンス No=Eqlでした。現在製造されているものと異なり、古いホプキンスには「HOPKINS NO=EQL」という刻印が入っています。今、刻印入りのものを入手するのは困難だと思いますが、このルアーが思い出の品であった理由は、この刻印ではありません。2014年にニューヨークを離れる時、釣り仲間の一人が、自分が持つ古いホプキンスに名前を彫り、私にプレゼントしてくれたのです。今朝になるまで私は、その思い出の品を使ったことはありませんでした。）
Because no fish attacked my topwater lures, I let my special Hopkins sink to the bottom of the sea. I had to be extremely careful because, unlike the shore along the Northeastern United States, there are a lot of big rugged rocks at the bottom along the Shimane Peninsula. Even when you are careful, your lure might get easily snagged and eventually lost. As soon as my special Hopkins reached the bottom, I felt a bottom feeder bit the lure sharply. My memorial Hopkins brought me a nice scorpion fish this morning, but it will never do it again for me. I hope it rests in peace at the bottom. I am sorry.
（トップウォーター・ルアーには魚が反応しないので、私はこの特別なホプキンスを海底まで沈めてみました。私は極度に注意深くあらねばなりませんでした。なぜなら、米国北東部の沿岸と異なり、島根半島沿いの海底には、大きくてデコボコした岩がたくさんあるからです。たとえ注意していたとしても、ルアーは簡単に根掛かりし、最終的には失われてしまいかねません。特別なホプキンスの着底と同時に、私は根魚による鋭いバイトを感じました。今朝、私の思い出深いホプキンスは、良い型のカサゴをもたらしてくれました。しかし今後はもう絶対、そんなことはしてくれません。どうか安らかに海底でお眠りください。ごめんよ。）
