As soon as I
found a bait fisherman already occupied Nitaki in Tayu at 5 a.m., I turned back
in the woods and went to Takanishi instead. There was no one at the spot, but
soon after I started fishing, a pair of lure fishermen and then Shun-san, one
of my fishing buddies, came to the spot. He gave me discouraging information.
He said he had heard that schools of sardines, which could be good baitfish for
yellowtail amberjacks, were not around the Sanin Region, where we live, but
around Kyushu Island. “Even so, you go fishing,” I said. He replied, “Only
after you cast a lure can you know for sure.” So we cast our lures, and we knew
there was no fish around. Instead, we caught a lot of seaweeds. Later I talked
to the pair of lure fishermen, who managed to cast lures from rocks that looked
less convenient, and I found that they were out of luck, too.
（午前５時、エサ釣りの方が既に手結のニタキに入っていらっしゃるのが見えたので、私は林の中を引き返し、代わりに高西へ向かったのでした。そこには誰もいませんでしたが、私が釣りを始めるとすぐに、二人組みのルアー釣り師と、続いて、釣り友達の一人であるShunさんがやって来られました。そして、やる気を萎えさせてしまうような情報が、Shunさんからもたらされました。ヒラマサにとって良いベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）となるイワシの群れは今、私たちの住む山陰地方ではなく、九州地方にいるそうなのです。「たとえそうであっても、釣りには来るわけですね」と私はShunさんに言いました。すると彼は「釣りは投げてみないと分かりませんから」と言うのでした。で、私たちはルアーを投げてみて、そして、確かに魚はいないことを知りました。代わりに、たくさんの海草が釣れました。その後、釣りにくそうな岩の上から頑張って投げておられた二人組みのルアー釣り師とも話したのですが、彼らもまた、幸運には恵まれなかったことが分かりました。）
