(No. 81) No Fish at Ichinose in Koizu (小伊津の一の瀬にて釣果なし)

There is a website on which one of local fishing tackle shop posts pictures of local fishermen with their catches. One yellowtail amberjack has been shown in one of the pictures posted since yesterday. According to the short comment attached to it, the fish was caught about 5:30 p.m. Usually yellowtail amberjacks can be caught only early in the morning, or at least that’s what they say. If they can be caught in the afternoon too, it would be really great. So I went out this afternoon to do the research at Ichinose in Koizu, Izumo City.

（ある地元の釣具屋は、釣り人が持ち込んだ魚を、ウェブサイトに掲載しています。昨日掲載された写真の中に、一匹のヒラマサがいました。写真に付けられた短いコメントによれば、その魚は午後５時30分頃に釣れたのだそうです。ふつう、ヒラマサは早朝にしか釣れません。少なくとも人々はそう言っています。もし午後の時間にも釣れるのであれば、実に素晴らしい。だから私は今日の午後、調査をするため、出雲市の小伊津にある一の瀬に行ったのでした。）

I started fishing around 5 p.m., and then several more lure fishermen came to the spot. Eventually, as many as eight lure fishermen were fishing from the spot at the same time. Most of them including me kept casting tenaciously until sunset, but nobody caught any fish. I talked to one of them at a parking space and asked, “Which is better, morning or evening?” He gave me an immediate answer. “Morning. In the evening only one of six fishermen may catch one fish unexpectedly.”

（午後５時頃から釣り始めましたが、その後も、数人のルアー釣り師がやって来ました。最終的には、８人ものルアー釣り師が同時にその場所で釣っているのでした。その多くが日没まで粘り強く頑張りましたが、誰も何も釣れません。駐車場でそのうちの一人に話しかけ、尋ねてみました。「朝と夕方、どっちがよく釣れるんですか？」。彼は即答しました。「朝ですね。夕方は、６人釣っていて、そのうちの一人がぽつりと１匹釣る感じです」。）

(No. 80) No Fish at Oshima in Koura and at Nanbo in Etomo Harbor (古浦の男島と恵曇港の南防にて釣果なし)

Arriving at Oshima just after dawn, I was the first to get to the gorgeous but tricky spot. The swell was so heavy today that it was almost scary. I couldn’t stand near the edge of rocks because strong waves repeatedly swept across them. Another fisherman soon arrived. “What a strong swell,” he said to me. “Be careful, my friend,” I replied. He fished with lures and bait alternately. Carefully avoiding the dangerous waves, I kept casting lures for more than 2 hours. Both of us caught no fish. I made a big x with my arms when I was leaving the spot. Seeing my sign, he pointed at himself and then made the same big x.

（夜明け直後に男島に到着しました。とても美しく、かつ油断のならないこの場所に一番乗りでした。今日はうねりが強く、怖いほどです。強い波が繰り返し岩を洗うので、岩の端に立てません。ほどなく、釣り人が一人やってきました。「うねりが強いですね」と彼は言いました。「どうか、お気をつけて」と私は応えました。彼は、ルアーとエサを交互に使いながら釣りました。私は、危険な波を注意深く避けながら、２時間以上、ルアーを投げ続けました。私たちのどちらにも魚は釣れません。その場を離れる時、私は両腕で大きなバツ印を作りました。そのサインを見た彼は、まず自分を指さしてから、同じく大きなバツ印を作ったのでした。）

Climbing up the slope in the woods from the shore to the parking space made me pant and sweat heavily as always. So I drove to Koura Public Beach to swim. The water was still very swimmable, but nobody was swimming except me. I remembered I would swim in the ocean until the middle of October when I was in New York. I decided to do the same in Matsue. Then, I fished for a while at Nanbo in Etomo Harbor in vain. There were a few lure fishermen. They said they caught only some small squids but no fish.

（林の中、海岸から駐車スペースまでの斜面をよじ登ると、いつものように、私の息は切れ、たくさん汗をかいていました。だから私は古浦海水浴場まで運転し、泳いだのでした。海はまだ十分に泳ぐことができますが、私以外に泳いでいる人はいません。ニューヨークにいた時は、10月の中旬まで海で泳いでいたことを思い出しました。松江でも同じことをしてやろうと私は決めました。それから、恵曇港の南防でしばらく釣りましたが、何も釣れません。ルアーの釣り人が数人いました。彼らが言うには、小さなイカはいくつか釣れたけれども、魚はぜんぜん釣れないとのことでした。）

(No. 79) No Fish at Nanbo in Etomo Harbor (恵曇港の南防にて釣果なし)

The Sada River flows into Etomo Harbor. According to the useful “Sanin Fishing Spot Guidebook”, you have a great chance to catch Japanese sea bass at the harbor when the river is swollen with heavy rains. Typhoon No.18 passed by the Sanin Region but caused considerable rain. So I fished at the tip of Nanbo, one of the breakwaters, for about 2 hours until sunset. I caught no fish. I came home and watched TV. Extreme flooding swept away houses in the Kanto district. Even right now houses are being destroyed. The footage reminds me of 2005 Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. When I was leaving Etomo Harbor this evening, I thought I was very unlucky because of no fish. Now I wonder how I could be so arrogant.

（佐陀川は恵曇港に流れ込んでいます。有益なガイドブック『山陰の釣り場総覧』によると、佐陀川が大雨で増水した時は、恵曇港でよくスズキが釣れるのだそうです。山陰地方を通り過ぎた台風18号は、かなりの雨をもたらしました。だから私は、防波堤の一つである南防で、日没までの２時間、釣りをしたのです。でも、何も釣れませんでした。家に帰り、テレビを見ました。異常な洪水が起きており、関東地方の家々が流されていました。今まさに、家々は破壊され続けています。その映像は、2005年にニューオーリンズを襲ったハリケーン・カトリーナを思い起こさせます。今夕、恵曇港を離れる時、魚が釣れなかったので自分のことをとても不運だと思いました。今は、どうしてそれほど傲慢になれたのだろうかと思います。）

(No. 78) Grass Puffer and Rescued Striped Beakfish at Ichinose in Koizu (小伊津の一の瀬にてクサフグ、そして救出されたイシダイ)

I started fishing at Ichinose in Koizu, Izumo City, about 5 a.m. today. I was at the same place a week ago, and nobody caught any fish at that time. I hoped the conditions had changed since then, but soon it was found to be almost the same as a week ago. All of the lure fishermen including me caught no fish again, whereas bait fishermen occasionally caught some very small fish. To be precise, one grass puffer was snagged on the hook of my lure.

（今日は朝５時から、出雲市の小伊津にある釣り場、一の瀬で釣り始めました。一週間前にも同じ場所にいたのですが、その時は誰にも魚は釣れませんでした。あれから状況が変わっていることを期待しましたが、ほとんど何も変わっていないことがすぐに判明しました。エサ釣りの人たちが時々、小さな魚を釣る一方で、私を含めたルアー釣りの人たちには何も釣れません。正確に言うと、クサフグが１匹、私のルアーの針に引っかかっただけでした。）

After I gave up fishing, I found a few grass puffers and one baby striped beakfish trapped in a tide pool. I also found that several grass puffers were stranded and already dead on the rocks. A large wave might have washed up the small fish, and some were surviving in the tide pool. To catch grass puffers with hands was too difficult, but I managed to catch the striped beakfish and released it in the ocean.

（釣りをあきらめた私は、数匹のクサフグとイシダイの幼魚１匹が、潮だまりに取り残されているのに気づきました。岩の上に打ち上げられ、既に死んでしまったクサフグもいます。大きな波が小魚たちを陸に打ち上げてしまい、そのうちの何匹かが磯だまりで生き延びているのでしょう。クサフグを手でつかまえるのは困難でしたが、イシダイの幼魚はなんとかつかまえ、海に逃がしてやったのでした。）
