(No. 1372) Abandoned Puffer Fish Narrowly Rescued at Kurauchi Bay (倉内湾にて放置されたフグを間一髪で救出)

Because the Japanese sea bass, which should have been plenty in the Ohashi River and Lake Nakaumi, didn’t love me at all although I was eager to love them back, I went to neither the river nor the lake this afternoon but to Kurauchi Bay. I hoped I would catch a different kind of fish than the cold-hearted Japanese sea bass. And I caught them. Lovely puffer fish. To be more precise, three puffer fish had been already caught before I arrived at Kurauchi Bay. Those three fish had been abandoned in a small tide pool. Probably the puffer fish were not what someone wanted to catch. The puffer fish are very good at nibbling bait. So fishermen tend to consider the puffer fish as a nuisance. Some think they have a right, or even an obligation, to abandon the puffer fish on land. Fortunately, two of the three puffer fish were still alive, though narrowly, when I arrived. I gently held them and released them to the ocean. One of them was already dead. I understand the logic in why some fishermen feel like eliminating the puffer fish, but I don't understand how it is possible for fishermen, who I believe love nature, to become so selfish and cruel. If what you want is just a certain kind of fish, don’t go to the sea but to a fishmonger. Do I need to add an additional phrase to the signboard? "Love nature or go to fish markets.”

（大橋川や中海にたくさんいるはずのスズキは、私が愛してやまないにもかかわらず、全く私を愛してくれないので、今日の午後は、川でも湖でもなく、倉内湾へ出かけました。私を冷たくあしらうスズキとは別の魚が釣れないかと期待したのです。すると釣れました。愛らしいフグです。正確に言うと、私が倉内湾に到着する前に、すでに３匹のフグが釣られていたのでした。その３匹は、小さな潮だまりに放置されていました。おそらく、どこかの誰かさんにとって、フグは単なる外道だったのでしょうね。フグは餌をかじるのが得意です。なのでフグを厄介者扱いする釣り人がいます。そして、そういう釣り人の中には、釣れたフグを陸上に放置する権利、あるいは義務すらが、自分にはあると思い込んでいる者もいるようなのです。幸いにも、私が到着した時、３匹のうちの２匹は、まだ何とか生きていました。私はフグを優しくつかんで、海に放しました。１匹はすでに死んでいました。一部の釣り人がフグを駆除したいと思う論理は理解できますが、自然を愛しているはずの釣り人が、どうしてそこまで利己的で残酷になれるのかは理解できません。自分の望む魚が欲しいだけなら、海ではなく魚屋に行けばいいのです。私は、看板に文言を追加した方がいいのでしょうか？　「自然を愛せ。さもなくば魚市場に行け」とか。）
