I had worked so hard today that I felt I needed
a break after
supper. So I grabbed my fishing tackle and took a walk
to the Ohashi
River. Soon after I started fishing, one friendly guy
talked to me. He had fishing tackle, too. He said he came from Kyoto. I said to
him, “Did you come to Matsue all the way to fish here?” He said, “Not exactly,
but I really want to catch Japanese sea bass here.” After we had a comfortable
chat at the beautiful riverbank, he went away. Then, I saw a big Japanese sea
bass bite my lure.
（今日は精一杯働いたので、夕食後、ちょっと一休みしたくなりました。だから私は釣り道具をひっつかむと、大橋川まで散歩をしたのです。釣り始めてすぐ、人なつっこい男性が話しかけてきました。彼もまた釣り道具を持っています。京都からやって来たのだそうです。私は尋ねました。「ここで釣りをするためにわざわざ松江まで来たの？」。すると彼は言いました。「そういうわけじゃないですけど、僕、どうしてもここでシーバスを釣りたいんです」。美しい川岸に立ち、くつろいでおしゃべりをしてから、彼は離れていきました。そして私は、大きなスズキ（シーバス）がルアーにかみつくのを見たのです。）
I was using Spofford’s Needlefish, a legendary
lure made on Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts. A good friend of mine in New
York gave me the lure just before I left the United States last fall. The fish I
got was big, but I did not expect I would catch anything at all. The riverbank
is considerably higher than the surface of the water. It is difficult to land a
fish of this size without a net. What can I do? While I was wondering, the fish
jumped out of the water and shook its head. The hook came out and the fish was
gone. The guy from Kyoto rushed to me and said, “I really wanted to see the Japanese sea bass!” After I came home, I found one of the hooks was stretched out by the fish.
（私が使っていたのは、マサチューセッツ州のマーサズ・ヴィニヤード島で作られている、スポフォーズ・ニードルフィッシュという名前の伝説的なルアーでした。昨秋、私が米国を離れる直前に、ニューヨークの友人が譲ってくれたものです。大きい魚がかかったわけですが、私は、何も釣れるとは思っていなかったのでした。川岸は、水面よりもかなり高いところにあります。ネットを使わずに、このサイズの魚を取り込むのは至難の業です。どうすればよいでしょう？ 思案していると、魚は水面からジャンプし、首を振りました。針がはずれ、魚は行ってしまいました。京都の男性が駆けてきて言いました。「ああ、シーバスを見たかったなあ！」。帰宅して気付いたのですが、ルアーに付いている針の一つが、思い切り伸ばされているのでした。）
