I took out some of my smallest lures this morning. As I reported on my previous blog, there were plenty of baby amberjacks swimming around Saruwatari yesterday, and they loved chasing my glittering silver spoon. The spoon attracted bunch of them, but it seemed too big to be attacked by those smaller fish. That’s why I took out much smaller lures today. The smallest one is just 6.5 cm (2.6 in.) long. I was confident of catching some of the fish today. I started casting those lures about 6 a.m. with eager anticipation and finished it at 8:30 a.m. with great disappointment. The condition of the sea around the fishing spot looked the same as yesterday, but, alas, none of those small amberjacks appeared and chased any of today’s lures. The fish seemed to be much more intelligent than I thought. Anyway, I am never good at using smaller lures. I will return to the wonderful world of my huge plugs.
（今朝は、私が持っているルアーの中でも、最小のものをいくつか持ち出しました。前回の投稿でお伝えした通り、昨日の猿渡周辺には、青物の赤ちゃんがたくさん泳いでいて、キラキラ輝く銀色のスプーンを追いかけるのが大好きだったのです。多くの魚を引き寄せたスプーンでしたが、どうやら、小さな魚たちが襲いかかるには大き過ぎるようでした。そのため今日は、ずっと小さいルアーを持ち出したのです。いちばん小さいのは、わずか6.5センチの大きさです。私は自信満々、今日は絶対に魚が釣れるだろうと思っていました。期待に胸を膨らませ、そういうルアーたちを午前６時頃から投げ始めた私は、非常にがっかりしながら、８時30分に納竿しました。釣り場周辺の海の状況は昨日と変わらないように見えましたが、しかし、なんたることか、小さな青物たちはまったく姿を現さず、今日のルアーを追いかけることはなかったのです。青物たちは、私が考えていたよりもずっと賢いようです。いずれにせよ私は、小さいルアーを使うのが得意なわけではありません。巨大なプラグの素晴らしき世界に戻ることにいたしましょう。）
