(No. 1405) No Fish but Sound of Frog at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて釣果なしもカエルの鳴き声）

One of my dreams in 2026 is to catch a fish using a plug with my “One Barbless Single Hook Solution.” Today I used three of such plugs at Saruwatari in Nonami: the Super Strike Zig Zag, Super Strike Little Neck Popper, and Guppy’s pencil popper. I started throwing those lures at 6:30 a.m. sharp and stopped 1 hour later. No fish responded to any one of those lures, but I didn’t think the result would have changed if I had used normal plugs, which have two treble hooks, because the sea looked empty this morning. I felt no lure in the world could entice fish into attacking it in such a quiet sea. On my way back to my car, I recorded the sound of Tago frogs along the creek in the woods. They are in dark slits between rocks. You can hear their sound but rarely see them. Their sound is a harbinger of Spring. If interested, check out the above video.

（2026年の私の夢の一つは、「バーブレスのシングルフックが１つだけ解決法」を施したプラグを使って魚を釣ることです。今日は野波の猿渡で、そうしたプラグを３つ使ってみました（スーパーストライク・ジグザグ、スーパーストライク・リトルネックポッパー、そしてグッピーのペンシルポッパー）。午前６時半ちょうどにルアーを投げ始め、１時間後に投げ終えました。どのルアーにも魚は反応しませんでした。今朝は海が空っぽのようだったので、トレブルフックが２つ付いている普通のプラグを使っても、釣果は変わらなかっただろうと思いました。こんなに静かな海では、どんなルアーを使っても、魚を誘って食いつかせることはできないだろうと感じました。車に戻る途中、林の中の小川沿いで、タゴガエルの鳴き声を録音しました。タゴガエルは、岩の間の暗い隙間にいます。鳴き声は聞こえるものの、姿を見ることはめったにありません。タゴガエルの鳴き声は、春の訪れを告げています。ご興味があれば、上の動画をご覧ください。）

(No. 1404) Wonderfully Designed “Fold Down Handle” of PENN 706Z (素晴らしい設計のPENN 706Z ”折りたたみ式ハンドル”)

I still don’t have time to go and do serious fishing at one of my usual rocky shores, so this is a short piece on another merit of my favorite reel. The PENN 706Z spinning reel is my favorite spinning reel. The design is simple with the smallest number of parts. And it’s bail-less. I would like to introduce one more good point of the reel. It has a “Fold Down Handle,” as is described on the original package. You can fold down the handle and turn it around toward the reel body, and the handle knob, which is gum or plastic, slightly touches the reel stem/foot. Then, the handle knob acts as a brake pad, keeping the handle from turning unintentionally. In addition, the 706Z doesn’t have a bail. You are free from worrying a bail might be bent in your fishing bag due to some unexpected impact. What a clever design! I wish current reel designers would learn more from this reel.

（いつもの磯に出かけて本格的な釣りをする時間が取れないままなので、今回は、私のお気に入りのリールが持つ長所の一つに関する短い投稿です。PENN 706Z スピニングリールは、私のお気に入りのスピニングです。デザインは単純で、部品点数は最小限です。そしてベールレスです。このリールにはもう一つ、優れた点があります。オリジナルのパッケージに記載されているように、「折りたたみ式ハンドル」が採用されているのです。ハンドルを折りたたんでリール本体の方に向けると、ゴムあるいはプラスチック製のハンドルノブがリールのステム/フットに軽く接触します。すると、このハンドルノブはブレーキパッドの役割を果たすので、ハンドルが不用意に回転しなくなるのです。その上、706Zにはベールがありません。釣りバッグの中に入れた時、何らかの衝撃でベールが曲がってしまうのではないかと心配しなくていいのです。なんて賢いデザインなのでしょう！　現代のリール設計者たちが、このリールからもっと学んでくれればいいのにと思います。）

(No. 1403) Casting Practice at Lake Shinji after Starting New Book Club (新しい読書会を立ち上げた後、宍道湖にてキャスティング練習)

I have been too busy to go fishing for a while. Not only my usual translation assignments but also my new endeavor have taken my free time. I have started a new book club called “Ichikara Issyo Ni Shinsho Wo Yomu Kai,” which can be translated into “A book club where all participants discuss and choose a Shinsho paperback from scratch and then read it together.” A shinsho is a form of Japanese paperback series, typically focusing on non-fiction or academic topics aimed at a general audience, not at experts/specialists. I conceptualized the original idea, talked to the owner of venue (she kindly accepted my proposal), created a few types of fliers, talked to local bookstores and left the fliers there, and, of course, looked for a shinsho that I would bring to the club as a candidate book. The first round of the club is scheduled for April 24th at Awaido in Izumo City. If you are interested, please check the book-club site I created, although it’s in Japanese. Today, I still don't have enough time to go fishing but have an overwhelming urge to cast a lure. So I brought my longest and biggest fishing tackle, the combination of 11’ Lamiglas Insane surf rod and PENN 706Z reel, to Lake Shinji and threw the GT Ice Cream as far as I could.

（釣りに行く時間が、しばらく取れていません。いつもの通訳の仕事だけでなく、新しい取り組みを始めたせいで、時間を取られてしまっているのです。「いちから一緒に新書を読む会」という新しい読書会を始めました。これは、参加者全員が、いちから一緒に新書を選んで、その一冊を読んでいくという読書会です。新書というのは、日本で発行されているペーパーバックの一種であり、ノンフィクションあるいは学術的なテーマを扱うことが多く、専門家ではない一般読者を対象としています。私は、この企画を練り、会場のご店主に話を持ちかけ（彼女は快く受け入れてくれました）、何種類かのチラシを作成し、地元の書店にチラシを置かせてもらい、そしてもちろん、候補の本として読書会に持ち込む新書を探しました。この読書会の第１回が、４月24日に出雲市の「あわい堂」で開かれます。ご興味のある方は、私が作成した読書会のサイトをご覧ください。私は今日も、釣りに行く時間は十分に取れませんでした。でも、どうしてもルアーを投げたくなったので、一番長くて大きなタックル、11フィートのラミグラス・インセイン・サーフロッドとPENN 706Zリールの組み合わせを宍道湖に持って行き、GTアイスクリームを可能な限り遠くまで投げました。）

(No. 1402) What looked like a preset knob but I decided was not is actually a preset knob! (プリセット・ノブのように見えたがプリセット・ノブではないと判断したものは、実際のところ、プリセット・ノブでした！)

Do you know that? The Internet is great! On one of my earlier posts (No. 1400) I investigated the mysterious part of my Accurate Boss 270 lever drag reel and decided the part was not a preset knob although it exactly looked like it. I was totally wrong. Since then I have explored for more information about the reel in the Internet. And I finally got convinced that the part should be a preset knob and it was stuck due to rust or sea salt. I went to a local hardware shop looking for a 7 mm hex wrench (Allen key), but a 7 mm wrench is kind of rare and they had only 6 and 8 mm wrenches. So I ordered it online yesterday and it arrived today. Using the 7 mm hex wrench, I was able to loosen the stuck screw of the preset knob. Now it works as it should. Wow. How wonderful the Internet is! How gorgeous the reel is!

（皆さん、知ってました？　インターネットって、やっぱりすごいってこと！　以前の投稿（No. 1400）において私は、アキュレート・ボス270・レバードラグリールの謎の部品について調べた結果、見た目は間違いなくプリセット・ノブであるようなのに、実はそうではないと判断したのです。ところが、それは全くの間違いだったのでした。あれ以来、私は、このリールに関するネット上の情報を探り続けました。そしてついに、あの部品はプリセット・ノブでしかあり得ず、それが錆か海水のせいでやはり固着しているのだと確信したのです。近所の金物屋に行って 7 mmの六角レンチを探しました。しかし、６ mmと８ mmのしかなく、７mmのは珍しいようなのです。そこで昨日、ネットで注文したところ、もう今日、届きました。この７mmの六角レンチを使うことで、固着していたプリセット・ノブのスクリューを緩めることができました。これでプリセット・ノブは正常に動作するようになったのです。すごい！　インターネットは、なんて素晴らしいのか！　このリールは、なんてカッコいいのか！）

(No. 1401) No Fish at Saruwatari in Nonami (野波の猿渡にて釣果なし)

Personal preference and curiosity can be unreasonable and capricious. They are often much stronger and more compulsive than objective merits based on solid facts. The Penn 535GS star drag reel, which I loved but recently parted with, is a winner and clearly a better option for the type of fishing I do: Casting plugs from rocky shores. It’s easier and more trouble-free. It produces more casting distance and much fewer backlash. Its retrieve speed is higher (1:6), so you don’t have to turn the handle desperately in order to use a fast-moving lure effectively. On the other hand, my Accurate Boss 270 lever drag reel, with which I recently replaced my Penn 535GS, is a loser from the technical standpoint of my fishing. It’s not easy, backlash-prone, and slow (1:4.6). But, what can I say? I can’t help falling in love with it. Anyway, regardless of what reel I use, I have not caught any fish for a while.

（個人的な嗜好や好奇心というのは、不合理であり、気まぐれなものです。それらはしばしば、確固とした事実に基づく客観的なメリットよりも、はるかに強力で強迫的なものになります。気に入っていたにも関わらず最近手放した PENN 535GSスタードラグリールは、勝者であり、私が行うような釣り、つまり磯からプラグを投げる釣りにとっては、明らかに、より優れた選択肢です。より容易であって、よりトラブルが少ないのです。より遠くまでキャストできますし、バックラッシュもはるかに少ないのです。リトリーブ速度も速く（1:6）、高速で動くルアーを効果的に使用するために、必死にハンドルを回す必要はありません。一方、最近 PENN 535GSと入れ替えたアキュレート・ボス270・レバードラグリールは、私の釣りの技術的な観点から見れば、敗者です。容易でなく、バックラッシュが発生しやすく、リトリーブ速度も遅いのです （1:4.6）。でも、好きにならずにいられないんだから、しょうがない。まあともかく、どのリールを使ったところで、しばらく魚は釣れていません。 ）

(No. 1400) My First Accurate Boss Reel (私の初めてのアキュレート・ボス・リール)

（ご注意：以下に書いた内容は間違っていました。プリセット・ノブのように見えるものは、実際にプリセット・ノブだったのです。No. 1402をご覧ください。）

I did it again… I knew my current reel suited my fishing needs better, but my curiosity and my peculiar custom (No. 1365) overcame every rationality. I parted with my wonderful PENN 535GS star drag reel in order to get a hugely discounted second-hand Accurate Boss 270 lever drag reel. I know a lever drag reel is inherently for boat jigging or trolling, not exactly for surf/shore casting. And I don’t do jigging. A fisherman like me, who wants to cast a topwater plug as far as possible, should use a star drag reel, whose spool is much lighter, which means better casting distance and fewer backlash. But I was getting bored with my PENN 535GS, which is too excellent, and I found the Accurate reel hugely discounted on sale. It’s because they said the preset knob was frozen, unmovable, or potentially broken. I have been interested in Accurate reels, but they are always beyond my budget. So I took a chance on the reel. I hoped a good solvent, such as WD-40, could make the preset knob usable again.

（またやってしまいました…。私の釣りのニーズには、今使っているリールの方が適切であることは分かってはいたんですが、好奇心と、そして風変わりな習慣（No. 1365）が、あらゆる合理性を打ち負かしてしまいました。素晴らしいPENN 535GSスタードラグリールを手放して、大幅に値引きされた中古のアキュレート・ボス270・レバードラグリールを手に入れてしまったのです。レバードラグリールは本来、ボート・ジギングやトローリング用であり、必ずしもサーフやショアからのキャスティング向きではありません。そして私はジギングはしないのです。トップウォーター・プラグを遠くに投げたい私のような釣り人ならば、スタードラグリールを使うべきだと承知しています。スタードラグリールのスプールはより軽く、そのため飛距離が伸びてバックラッシュも少ないのですから。しかし、私は、あまりに優秀過ぎるPENN 535GSに飽きつつあったのです。そして、中古のアキュレート・リールが大幅に値引きされているのを見つけてしまったのでした。なぜ値引きされていたかというと、プリセット・ノブが固着していて動かない、あるいは壊れている可能性さえあるからのようでした。アキュレートのリールに興味はありましたが、いつも高額過ぎて、私の予算を大幅に超えているのでした。なので、このリールに賭けてみることにしました。WD-40などの優れた溶剤を使えば、プリセット・ノブが再び使えるようになるのではないかと思ったのです。）

As soon as I obtained the reel, I disassembled it, cleaned all the parts, and examined its mechanism. Then I determined that the reel was not broken. The preset knob was not frozen. The truth is that the reel doesn’t have a preset knob! What looks like a preset knob is something else. For other lever drag reels I have used, first you preset a maximum drag force you would like to use, dialing the preset knob. Then you adjust the drag force during fishing between 0 and the maximum, turning the lever back and forth. On the other hand, for my Accurate Boss 270, there is no mechanism inside allowing me to change a maximum drag force. The maximum force seems inherently set and unchangeable. The lack of the mechanism contributes to the simpler reel design. But I might be wrong. If you are familiar with Accurate Boss reels, please let me know your opinions.

（リールを入手後、すぐに分解し、全ての部品を清掃して、機構を点検しました。その結果、このリールは壊れておらず、プリセット・ノブも固着していないことが判明しました。というか実は、このリールには、プリセット・ノブなど付いていないのです！　プリセット・ノブのように見えますが、実は何か別のものです。これまで私が使ってきた他のレバードラグリールでは、まずプリセット・ノブを回して、使用したい最大ドラグ値をプリセット（事前設定）します。その後、釣りをしながら、レバーを前後に動かして、ドラグ値をゼロから最大の間で調整するのです。一方で、私のアキュレート・ボス270には、最大ドラグ値を変更するための機構が内蔵されていません。最大ドラグ値は固定されていて、変更できないようなのです。しかし、この機構がないことで、リールのデザインがよりシンプルになっています。でも、もしかしたら私は間違っているのかもしれません。アキュレート・ボスに詳しい方がいらっしゃいましたら、ご意見をお聞かせください。）
