(No. 457) More Missed Japanese Sea Bass at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にてさらにスズキを逃す)

Taking advantage of the free time between my first and second translation assignments today, I walked to Lake Shinji this afternoon to cast my favorite lures for about one hour. I got two strikes from the Japanese sea bass during this period of time. The Line Stretcher’s Surface Tension produced the first strike, but the fish was not hooked. The second strike occurred when I was using CCW’s Small Danny. When I cast this brightly colored lure, it got tangled up in the fishing line in the air.

（今日の午後、１回目と２回目の通訳業務の間の自由時間を利用して、宍道湖まで歩き、１時間ほどお気に入りのルアーを投げました。その１時間で、スズキのストライクが２回ありました。最初のストライクをもたらしたのは、ライン・ストレッチャーのサーフェス・テンションでしたが、魚は針にかかりませんでした。２回目のストライクが起きたのは、CCWのスモール・ダニーを使っている時でした。色鮮やかなこのルアーを投げた時、空中で、ルアーと釣り糸がからまってしまいました。）

This entanglement happens occasionally and it prevents the lure from swimming properly. Anyway I had to retrieve the lure. So it moved improperly and made an irregular splash, and this splash might have intrigued the second fish. The fish attacked the lure on the surface as soon as the splash was settled. At that moment I slightly hesitated to pull the line tight. I was afraid that the entanglement might cause some problems such as line break. The fish was hooked, but it broke free easily a few seconds later. It was probably due to my hesitation.

(No. 456) Missed Japanese Sea Bass at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にてスズキを逃す)

One Japanese sea bass finally struck my lure at Lake Shinji. It happened about 2:30 p.m., several minutes after I had a chat with a lure fisherman who had come to and fished at the shore before I arrived. The fish attacked my CCW’s Jetty Swimmer. As I had mentioned before, this plug is one of the most productive lures in my American arsenal. “Fish on!” I screamed toward the lure fisherman, but he did not seem to notice it. We had walked in the opposite direction from each other while casting lures, so he was already too far. Anyway, it didn’t matter. Several seconds later, the fish jumped out of the water and shook its head. Unfortunately, the hook came out. The fish looked 70 to 75 cm (27 to 30 in.) long.

（ついに宍道湖で、一匹のスズキが私のルアーを襲いました。それが起きたのは午後２時30分頃、私より先に湖岸に来ていらしたルアー釣り師とのおしゃべりを終えてから数分後のことでした。その魚が襲ったルアーは、CCWのジェティー・スイマーでした。以前にも書きましたが、このプラグは、私が持つアメリカ製ルアーの中でも、最もよく魚が釣れるものの一つです。「来ました！」と私はルアー釣り師に向かって叫びましたが、どうも気づいてもらえなかったようです。私たちはお互い逆方向に歩きながらルアーを投げていたため、彼は既に遠くに離れていたのでした。いずれにせよ、そんなことは問題ではありません。数秒後、その魚は水面からジャンプすると、首を振ったのです。すると針がはずれてしまいました。魚の全長は70〜75センチくらいに見えました。）

(No. 455) Poor Needlefish at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にて可哀想なダツ)

While the number of Japanese sea bass seems small in Lake Shinji, there seem plenty of needlefish vigorously chasing small fish. Today I caught such a poor needlefish on Line Stretcher’s Surface Tension. To be accurate, the fish chased the topwater lure, and somehow the lower half of its body ended up getting snagged on the lure’s single hook. The hook is barbless, so that the poor fish got released without any trouble, but still I felt pity for the fish.

（宍道湖では、どうやらスズキの数は少ないものの、小魚を盛んに追いかけ回すダツの数は多いようです。昨日は、ライン・ストレッチャーのサーフェス・テンションで、そんな可哀想なダツが釣れました。正確に言うと、そのダツはこのトップウォーター・ルアーを追いかけてきて、どういうわけか、その下半身が、ルアーに付いている唯一の針に引っかかってしまったのです。針はバーブレス（カエシがつぶしてある）なので、無理なくリリースできたものの、それでもやはり可哀想に思いました。）

(No. 454) Still “Bozu” at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にてやはりボウズ)

I am tempted to just copy and paste my last post here. The situation has not changed at all. Another one week has passed without even one bite. As far as I know, other lure fishermen have been out of luck too at the shore of Lake Shinji. In Japan, you can describe this situation using a Japanese word, “bozu.” It means a Buddhist monk in a general sense. However, fishermen use this word in a little strange fashion. When you don’t catch fish that you aim for, you can call the situation “bozu.” There are multiple theories on the origin of this peculiar usage. I don’t know which theory is reliable, so I don’t mention them here. Interestingly, one real “bozu” is quietly sitting in a park at the shore of the lake. His name is Hoichi, and he is famous as the tragic character of one Japanese horror story. If you are interested, you can google “Hoichi the Earless.”

（前回の投稿をコピペしたい誘惑に駆られています。状況はまったく変わっていないのです。バイトの一つすらないまま、また１週間がたちました。私が知る限り、他のルアー釣り師もまた、宍道湖岸では運に見放されています。日本では、こういう状況を、「坊主」という語を用いて表現できます。この語が意味するのは、一般的には、仏教の僧侶です。しかし釣り人たちは、少し変わった意味でこの語を使います。狙っている魚が釣れない時のことを「坊主」と言うのです。この奇妙な使い方の起源については諸説あるのですが、どの説の信憑性が高いかは分からないので、ここでは省略します。おもしろいことに、宍道湖岸の公園では、本物の「坊主」が一人静かに座っています。彼の名前は芳一。日本の怪談の悲劇的な登場人物として有名な坊主です。もしもご興味があれば、「耳なし芳一」で検索してみてください。）

(No. 453) Still No Fish at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にて引き続き釣果なし)

Another one week has passed without even one bite. I walked to Lake Shinji four times today and kept casting my favorite lures for Japanese sea bass in vain. I talked with a few of regular fishermen at the shore of the lake. None of them had caught huge Japanese sea bass this season. Accordingly, all of them looked a bit tired and disappointed. Where are the fish in Lake Shinji? They might not be in the lake?

（バイトの一つすらないまま、また１週間がたちました。今日は私は４回、宍道湖まで歩き、スズキを釣るためにお気に入りのルアーを無駄に投げ続けたのです。常連の釣り人数人と、湖岸で話しました。今シーズン、彼らの誰にも大型のスズキは釣れていません。そのため、彼ら全員が少々疲れ、失望しているように見えます。スズキたちは宍道湖のどこにいるのでしょう？　もしかして湖にはいないのかも？）

(No. 452) No Fish at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にて釣果なし)

Where are huge Japanese sea bass in Lake Shinji? Has the so-called “Konoshiro-pattern” already begun or not? Since my last post I have been to the shore of Lake Shinji many times, and I even lost weight. Still, nothing has happened. I had anticipated that I would catch at least one huge Japanese sea bass on a big American lure by June, but it did not happen. Where are the fish in Lake Shinji?
