(No. 375) No Fish at Saigo Port in Dogo, Oki Islands (隠岐諸島の島後、西郷港にて釣果なし)

I am now in Dogo, the biggest island of the Oki Islands in the Sea of Japan. Being part of Shimane Prefecture, the Oki Islands have some of the most prestigious fishing spots in the region. This is the first time I have been to the islands since my childhood. Obviously any one of my American lures had not been used here. I am excited, but the purpose of visiting the Dogo Island is not necessarily fishing. The annual book discussion event, where a few of my old university classmates and I get together to discuss one or two designated books, is to be held in Matsue tomorrow evening, and we decided to visit the Oki Islands for sightseeing before the event. This year’s event is not private but open to public. It will be held at Toeisha, a small secondhand bookstore and also a cafe in my neighborhood. We are going to discuss the 16th century classic, “Utopia” by Thomas More. If interested, you could join us even if you have not read the book. The event starts at 7:00 p.m. this Sunday.

（私は今、島後にいます。島後は、日本海に浮かぶ隠岐諸島最大の島です。島根県の一部である隠岐諸島には、この地域有数の釣り場がいくつか存在します。私が隠岐を訪れるのは、子供の時以来です。当然ながら、私が所有するアメリカのルアーのどれも、隠岐で使われたことはありません。私は興奮しているのですが、島後を訪れた理由は、必ずしも釣りというわけではありません。大学時代の私の同級生数人が毎年集い、定められた本１、２冊について議論する読書会を、明日の夜、松江で開くのですが、私たちは、その会の前に隠岐諸島を観光に訪れることにしたのです。今年の読書会は、関係者のみで開くのではなく、一般に公開される形で行われます。冬營舎という、近所にある古本屋兼カフェで開かれるのです。私たちは、16世紀に書かれた古典、トマス・モアによる『ユートピア』について話し合います。もしもご興味があれば、たとえ『ユートピア』を読んでいなくても参加できますよ。会は、日曜日の午後７時から始まります。）
