My photo
After living in the United States for 15 years, I came back to my hometown Matsue, a small city in the western part of Japan, in November 2014. I imposed a simple rule on myself. Use only American saltwater lures for at least one year and report what they catch...... When a year had passed since then, I decided not to lift this ridiculous restriction.

(No. 228) No Fish but Unfamiliar Sign at Ohtoko-bana

This morning I fished at Ohtoko-bana in Izumo City for the first time in six months. I got to the fishing spot before dawn. Nobody was around but me. “Yay! I have this gorgeous spot all to myself!” I was so happy that I almost shouted out. The water was not calm but choppy. My anticipation got elevated, but unfortunately no fish hit my lures around dawn, which in general is the best time for fishing. Later, one bait fisherman came to Ohtoko-bana, but he went to the other end of the large and treacherous fishing spot, so I could not talk to him. I kept casting my favorite American lures tenaciously, but I had to call it a day shortly after 9 a.m.
When I returned to a parking space overlooking Ohtoko-bana, I found an unfamiliar sign that says, “Keep out the island: you are not allowed to get into the island from December to February.” I could not remember whether the sign was already there when I came to Ohtoko-bana last time. I was also baffled. What does “the Island” mean? Ohtoko-bana is not an island but a rocky shore. After I came home, I looked through my photo album and I found a picture that I took on December 23 of last year. At least 11 months ago there was no “Keep out the island” sign. I am still baffled. Can we fish at Ohtoko-bana in this winter or not?

  2. Shun
