(No. 54) No Fish at Nazuna in Kataku (片句のナズナにて釣果なし)

It was 20 to 30 minutes after dawn when I visited Nazuna in Kataku again. There were already three fishermen around the area, who were using baits. There was no lure fisherman except me. Although it was early in the morning, which people think is more productive hours for lure fishing than in the evening, I didn’t catch any fish. The other fishermen didn’t catch either. Actually the condition of the water seemed the same as my last outing here in the evening of three days ago. So I gave up fishing early and went to Takashiro-bana, another fishing spot to the east of Nazuna, to take pictures of the Kataku hamlet.
（片句のナズナを再び訪れたのは、夜明けから20〜30分後のことでした。一帯には、既に３人の釣り人の姿があり、彼らはエサ釣りをしているのでした。ルアー釣りは私だけです。ルアー釣りの場合、夕方よりも早朝が良いと考えられており、私も早朝にルアーを投げたわけですが、魚は何も釣れません。他の釣り人にも釣れていません。実際のところ、海の状況は、３日前に訪れた夕刻と変わりがないようです。私は早々に釣りをあきらめ、ナズナの東にある別の釣り場、高城鼻へ行き、そこから片句集落の写真を撮ったのでした。）

(No. 53) No Fish at Nazuna in Kataku (片句のナズナにて釣果なし)

Today I was alone in the afternoon at Nazuna, one of rocky tips in Kataku. This is the first time that I have been here, and it is another stunning scenery. There was a lot of tiny baitfish along the shore, but I didn’t catch any fish. I kept casting lures for a few hours before sunset. I will definitely visit this place again and it must be early in the morning. They say fish around the Shimane Peninsula respond to lures much more vigorously in the morning.

（今日の午後は、片句にある磯の突端、ナズナで一人ぼっちでした。この場所を訪れたのは初めてで、そしてまたもや、ものすごい景色の場所なのでした。とても小さいベイトフィッシュ（大きな魚の餌となる小魚）が岸沿いにたくさんいるのに、魚は何も釣れません。私は日没前の数時間、ルアーを投げ続けました。絶対にもう一度、この場所を訪れるつもりです。それは朝早くなくてはいけません。島根半島周辺の魚たちは、朝の方がルアーによく反応すると言われています。）

(No. 52) No Fish at between Koizu and Mitsu Harbors (小伊津港と三津港の間にて釣果なし)

This is the first time I have been to fishing spots between Koizu and Mitsu Harbors in Izumo City. You can park your car at the shoulder of the road along the beautiful coast. The road is broad enough. Fishing spots such as Ichinose, Igagurijima, and Hyojyugasima are immediately adjacent to the road. What an easy access! Partly because of it and partly because it is a Sunday, there were many fishermen there.

（出雲市の小伊津港と三津港の間に広がる釣り場に初めて行きました。美しい海岸沿いの道路の路肩に駐車します。十分に広い道路なのです。一の瀬、イガグリ島、そして兵十島といった釣り場が、道路のすぐ隣にあります。なんて簡単に行けるのでしょう！　そのおかげもあり、また今日が日曜日だということもあって、たくさんの釣り人の姿が見られます。）

Unfortunately, I didn’t see anybody catch any fish, and I was not an exception. Usually I am happy even if I don’t catch any fish. Because just getting to a fishing spot is often tough and that’s why it is fulfilling. It was a bit too easy today to be very happy.

（でも残念ながら、誰にも何も釣れなかったようです。私もまた例外ではありませんでした。いつもなら、たとえ魚が釣れなくても、私は幸せです。なぜなら、釣り場に到達すること自体が往々にして大変なので、充実感が得られるからです。でも今日はちょっと楽すぎて、それほど幸せではなかったのでした。）

(No.51) No Fish at Terashima-no-kita in Tayu (手結の「寺島の北」にて釣果なし)

I found another beautiful spot in the Shimane Peninsula. Before sunset I was at Terashima-no-kita on the west of Tayu Harbor. This is the first time I’ve been to this small harbor, which lies to the east of Etomo. Only a few local residents were in the street. “This is such a beautiful place,” I talked to one of them who was passing me by. In a humble attitude he replied to me, “Is it so?  Yeah, right. This is better than TV. I prefer watching the beauty of nature to watching TV.”  At Terashima-no-kita, there were several fishermen trying to catch squids, but they said to me it was not very good. I didn’t catch anything either, but only seeing the view and standing at the middle of it made me happy.

（島根半島でまた一つ、美しい場所を見つけました。日没前に私は、手結港の西側にある「寺島の北」にいたのです。恵曇の東方に位置するこの小さな港を訪れたのは初めてでした。通りにはほんの数人、地元の方が出ておられます。「綺麗なところですね」。そばを通られたお一人に声をかけました。その男性はご謙遜して言われました。「そげですかいね？　そげかもしれません。テレビよりいいですが。自然を見ちょうほうがテレビよりいいですわ」。「寺島の北」では数人の釣り人がイカを狙っておられましたが、状況はあまり良くないとのこと。私にも何も釣れませんでした。でも、あの景色を見て、その中に立てただけで幸せになれたのでした。）

(No. 50) No Fish at Ikesu in Etomo (恵曇の生須にて釣果なし)

It was the first time I’ve fished at Ikesu, a flat rocky spot on the east of Etomo Harbor. I had come down to this place once before without my fishing tackle. At that time the gorgeous view impressed me very much. Today I fished for a while before sunset. The sea was incredibly serene (probably not very good for fishing). There weren’t other fishermen. No one was around. Only me. It looked as if everything had come to rest except the serenity.

（恵曇港の東側にある平らな岩場、生須で釣りをしたのは初めてでした。前に一度、釣具を持たずに、ここに降りて来たことがあります。その時、素晴らしい風景に感動したのでした。今日は日没前に少しだけ釣りをしました。海は信じられないほどに穏やかです（おそらく釣りにはあまり良くないはず）。他に釣り人はいません。人の姿はありません。私だけです。まるで、静謐さ以外の全てのものが、動きを止めたかのようでした。）

(No. 49) No Fish at Ohashi RIver (大橋川にて釣果なし)

I started fishing just before sunset at the Ohashi River. Running from east to west through the middle of Matsue City, the river connects Lake Nakaumi with Lake Shinji. At this time of the year, you can catch migratory Japanese sea bass at the river, but tonight nobody seemed to be lucky. I just enjoyed refreshing night breeze.

（日没の少し前、大橋川で釣り始めました。松江市の中央を東西に走るこの川は、中海と宍道湖を結んでいます。一年のこの時分は、回遊性のスズキが釣れるのですが、今晩は、運の良い人が誰もいないようでした。私はただ、気持良く吹く夜のそよ風を満喫したのでした。）

(No. 48) Big Needlefish at Lake Shinji (宍道湖にて大きなダツ)

I got into the habit of spending time at the shore of Lake Shinji around sunset. It takes only a few minutes on foot to get to the lake from my home. The weather has been very nice. Talking to fishermen while casting favorite lures is very fun. 
（日没時に宍道湖の岸辺で時を過ごすのが習慣となりました。湖は、我が家から歩いて数分のところにあるのです。良い天気が続いています。お気に入りのルアーを投げながら釣り人に話しかけるのは、とても楽しいものです。）
Just after sunset, some fish started splashing around on the surface of the water. First I though they were gray mullets, but it was a needlefish that attacked my Hopkins No=Eql. The fish measured 90 cm (35.5 in.). A short while later a bit smaller one hit my Super Strike Super “N” Fish. This type of lure is called a needlefish plug in the U.S. Wow. A needlefish caught a needlefish!!

（日が沈むとすぐに、魚たちが水面をバシャバシャやり始めました。ボラだろうと最初は思いましたが、私のホプキンス No=Eqlを攻撃してきたのはダツでした。90センチの大きさです。しばらくして、今度は少し小さいのがスーパーストライク・スーパー“N”フィッシュを襲ったのでした。このタイプのルアーは米国でニードルフィッシュ（ダツ）プラグと呼ばれます。すごいですね。ダツがダツをつかまえました!!）
