I am afraid that I am still on my long way to full recovery from the injury. Not sure when I can resume the hardcore fishing as I had done before. I have wondered how to take advantage of this unfortunate hiatus. I came up with an idea this afternoon and drove to Koura Public Beach. I performed strength tests of braided line there. In general I prefer second-hand reels to new unused reels. A new reel looks beautiful because it doesn’t have any scratches. When I am using a new reel, I tend to pay too much attention to it because I want to avoid any scratch that could spoil the beauty. Even slight contact with a rock could leave a fatal scratch on my reel, and it would certainly make me sad. The beauty of the reel sometimes comes first even when I am standing at a potentially life-threatening rocky shore, and the safety of myself falls into a secondary matter. It is wrong and obviously dangerous. That’s why I don’t like a new reel. I like a second-hand reel with plenty of scratches. It might not look beautiful, but I can focus my attention only on my safety. The more scratches a reel has, the safer a fisherman becomes, I think.
（負傷からの完治にはまだまだ時間がかかりそうです。以前のような本格的な釣りをいつ再開できるのか分かりません。私は、この不運な中断をどうやって有効活用しようかと考えてきました。そして今日の午後、私はあるアイデアを思いつき、古浦海水浴場に車を走らせました。PEラインの強度試験を行ったのです。一般的に私は、未使用の新品リールよりも、中古リールの方が好きです。新品のリールは、引っかき傷が付いていないので、美しく見えます。新品のリールを使っている時、引っかき傷を付けてその美しさを損ないたくはないので、私はついつい気を遣い過ぎてしまいます。岩と軽く接触しただけでも致命的な傷がリールに残り、悲しい思いをしてしまうのです。その結果、生死に関わり得る磯に立っている時でさえ、リールの美しさが第一となり、身の安全は二の次となってしまうことがあります。それは間違っていますし、明らかに危険です。なので私は、新品のリールが嫌いなのです。傷だらけの中古リールを好みます。美しくはないかもしれませんが、私は自分の安全だけに注意を傾けることができます。リールに傷があればあるほど、釣り人はより安全になるのだと、私は思います。）
When I obtain a second-hand reel, it sometimes comes with fishing line left on its spool. I know I shouldn’t rely on such fishing line because it might be already damaged. However, two sets of braided line that came with my recently purchased two reels looked so new and undamaged that I decided to use them. That’s why I performed the strength test this afternoon. I tied the end of line to a fixed structure on the beach and gave the maximum tension to the line in order to see whether it could withstand or not. Performing such an undependable test, I was surrounded with only the sound of sea, the waves rolling into the shore. Only then did I realize that the strength test was not what I really wanted to do. I just wanted to see the sea.
